What I fix, and what it costs

Repairs only — no new sails, no canvas work. Standard materials included. Anything not listed bills at the hourly rate, quoted in writing first.

Restitch is per foot of run — measured once along the run, not per row of stitching. Inside edge, outside and horizontals included; cover run = leech + foot. Genoa UV cover carries the higher rate: it's edge work, stitching through Sunbrella over Dacron.

Minimum $95 per visit — a floor, not an hour. Work bills at $85/hr, but no visit bills below $95. Standard materials are included; † marks a line with a named material at standard spec — anything above that is quoted first. Rush (under 5 business days) adds 25%. Patch rates assume the sail is already on the bench; a standalone patch carries the minimum. Turnaround runs from when the sail reaches the bench.

Some jobs need a real inspection before a number is possible — “restitch wherever it needs it” means opening the whole sail, where three broken slides does not. If yours does, I'll tell you before I start, and the $75 is credited if you go ahead. Pickup or delivery to your home or business is $45 each way within 20 miles of Frisco.

Step 01

Bring it in

Four handoff options — Savannah weeknights, DCYC midweek, Texoma Saturdays, or pickup from your door. Arrange the time first.

Step 02

Get a written quote

I look it over and quote off the menu — nothing over $150 starts until you say go. Some jobs need a real inspection before a number is possible; if yours does, I'll say so first.

Step 03

Sail again

A week or two from when the sail reaches my bench. Rush available. You collect it ready to bend on.

Four ways to hand off a sail

Arrange it first — I confirm back before anything moves.

Every handoff is arranged in advance — all four options. Tell me which one you want when you get in touch, and wait for my confirmation before you move the sail. A sail left anywhere without a confirmed handoff isn't in my care — I won't know it's there.

Within 20 miles of Frisco, Texas. The $45 applies each direction — $90 for pickup and return.

How pickup works

Have the sail off the boat and bagged before I arrive. I collect the bag — I don't drop sails off the rig. Same for covers and bag projects. Not sure how? Just ask.

Before you bring it in

  1. Dry it. A damp sail bagged up grows mildew before it reaches the bench.
  2. Shake out the grit. Sand dulls needles and scores cloth.
  3. Check for rodent nesting. Barns and storage units are prime sites. If you find droppings, staining, or nesting — don't shake, sweep, or vacuum it. Bag it and call me first.
  4. Pull what you want back. Battens, and hardware that isn't part of the repair.
  5. Mark the damage. A photo or tape at the spot keeps the quote down.

On #3: dried rodent droppings and urine can carry hantavirus, which goes airborne the moment the material is disturbed — exactly what shaking or vacuuming does. Don't, whatever the sail is made of. The CDC covers the health side — How to Clean Up After Rodents — but it was written for houses: its bleach solution is far too strong for sailcloth and will ruin a nylon spinnaker outright. Don't improvise a cleaning. Bag it and call me — it's very likely still a good sail.

When Mariner Sails closed after 50 years, DFW lost its repair loft. Sail Mender picks up that thread — a lean, one-person shop doing repair work well and turning it around fast.

I learned the trade on Mariner's floor: restitching, patching, UV covers, hardware, modifications — dinghies to cruisers. No overhead, no upsell, just honest repairs off a fixed menu.
